Types of Massage:
Sport
Training to improve your sports performance means that you are working your muscles hard, so they are likely to become tight and sore. Tight muscles are more susceptible to both acute muscle injuries and overuse problems. Our Massage Therapists have a sound knowledge of muscular and skeletal systems and will tailor the treatment to meet your specific needs. Benefits include:
- Speeding of recovery after hard training or competition.
- Increased muscular flexibility.
- Spotting potential overuse problems before they become overuse injuries.
- Aiming to enhance performance and prevent injury.
Pregnancy
More and more expectant mothers are discovering the benefits of this massage. Massage during pregnancy focuses on the special physical needs of the mum-to-be. It has been shown to:
- Improve your mood and thereby reduce stress and anxiety.
- Relieve muscle aches and stiffness.
- Improve blood circulation bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of both you and your baby. This means greater vitality for you and better nourishment for your baby.
- Assist in reducing fluid retention and enhances the health and nourishment of your skin.
- Reduce painful headaches, sinus congestion and helps to lower blood pressure.
Hot Stone Therapy
This is an exciting massage treatment where basalt stones are heated and applied to the body in unique and relaxing ways. The warmth of these stones penetrates the muscles and balances the nervous system like no other treatment! Benefits include:
- Deeper relaxation than standard massage techniques.
- Increased range of motion and calming of the nervous system.
- Increased rate and flow of blood circulation.
- Relaxation, decongestion, detoxification and accelerated lymph drainage.
Relaxation
This massage is one of the most indulgent massages you can have. It is a full-body treatment involving soft music, soft lighting and aromatherapy oils. You will have a long, luxurious massage which will combine Aromatherapy, Indian head massage and Eastern facial massage. This is the massage to choose if you want to relax, be pampered and spoiled.
Spinal Soft tissue
This massage is designed to complement your osteopathy or chiropractic treatment. Benefits include:
- Reduced inflammation and muscle spasm in your spine and relieves tension in spinal nerves.
- Reduced scar tissue in spinal tendons, ligaments and muscles.
- Improved blood circulation, which aids in the recovery of muscle soreness.
- Increased endorphin levels which are the chemicals the body produces that make you feel good, which have been found to be very effective in reducing back pain.
Traditional Thai Yoga
This is an ancient healing art that works on an energy line system through which the body’s natural life force flows. Blockages in this ‘life force’ can cause aches, pains and disease. The therapist uses hands, feet and elbows to apply pressure to points along these lines, with gentle stretching and applied Hatha yoga.
This releases blocked energy and frees the body’s own natural healing potential.
This massage is suitable for all and can be adapted to achieve your own goals. Benefits include:
- Improves flexibility, performance and ability to withstand pressure. Even the most flexible yoga instructors benefit as passive stretching allows you to relax at least 10% further into the stretch.
- Great benefits for sports enthusiasts who want their body to achieve maximum performance.
- Improved circulation and function of lymph glands.
- Good for musculoskeletal problems caused by inflexibility (i.e. back, neck, shoulder etc).
- Can also help with asthma, headaches and bowel problems.
Tips to get the most out of your massage
- Be on time and receptive. If you arrive in a frenzied, rushed state, it will take longer to relax.
- If you don’t want to remove all your clothing, discuss it with the practitioner.
- Do not eat just before your session and wear what you will be comfortable.
- Good communication is very important. Let your practitioner know what you want from the massage and during the session, speak up if you have any feedback.
- Some people like to talk during a massage session, while others remain silent. In general you should do whatever you feel like and your practitioner will follow your lead.
- Breathing helps to facilitate relaxation. People often hold their breath when they feel anxious, or a sensitive area is massaged. If you realize this is happening, remind yourself to breathe.
- Try not to tighten up during your massage. Let your practitioner know if this is happening. They may need to adjust the massage technique being used.
- If you find your thoughts are racing during the massage, one way to be more “body-centered” and to quiet the mind is to focus on the hands of the practitioner and how the touch feels.
- If you are dizzy or light headed after your massage, do not get off the table too fast.
- Drink plenty of water after your massage.
- Allow for some open, quiet time after your massage session if possible.
Remember, although a single massage will be enjoyable, the effects are cumulative and a course of massage treatments will bring the most benefits. Sessions in combination with spinal adjustments (Osteopathy/Chiropractic) are a great way of helping to keep your spine as healthy as possible.
